Book Ruminations: Northlander

Meg Burden is a lovely science fiction and fantasy fan.  I've read her LJ for quite some time.  Northlander is her first published book.  It's a good story and definitely met for a younger audience.  It follows Ellin, a Southling girl living in the Northlands with her father, who is a healer.  The writing is fun, flows well, and there is some really great imagery here.  There's strife, magic, an unjust actions.  The writing moves quickly.  One of the things I really like about the book is that there is a deaf character.  Too often, disabled characters are painted very shallowly but Burden does a lovely job of making the character well rounded and interesting.  This is an easy read and apparently there is a sequel (which I just I need one more book!).
