Let me start off by saying that I love Nnedi Okorafor's work.  Her books are vibrant, colorful, and combine elements of both the everyday and scifi/fantasy.  The Shadow Speaker is no different.  The story is a coming of age novel that revolves largely around Ejii who lives in a world that has been changed by both nuclear weapons and "peace bombs".  I won't say more, but I will say that the novel is a delight.  It's not for children and I would argue that it's not for young teens either as there is a lot of violence.  The violence is not gorily depicted, but it is there.  That is one of the things that I love about Nnedi's work is that she doesn't shy away from showing the reality of things from violence to unabashed delight - and believe me, there is a lot of delight in her books.  I find her work to be good for thinking and good for the soul.
