Traveling: Amsterdam

I loved Amsterdam!  I've been back in the US and it's been a whirlwind since I got back.  I'm finally taking a moment to update the blog a bit.  What can I say about Amsterdam?  My hotel was in an excellent location and other than bonking my head on an overhang when going up some stairs, the place was just awesome.  I stayed at La Boheme and I highly recommend it, especially if you are on a budget but want a good place that is eco friendly, in a good location, and has a hotel cat!  Anyway, I know what you want to see, you want to see some pictures!

I took a boat tour of the canals and this is a pretty good picture of Amsterdam.  There are bicycles EVERYWHERE.  If you are a cyclist, then Amsterdam is the place for you.  The bikes are big, with fat tires, and wide seats.  They looked quite comfortable.

Also, tons and tons of art in Amsterdam.  I went to the Rijks Museum which is unfortunately mostly closed off for renovation but they had moved their best pieces into 9 rooms that highlighted them.  I was quite fascinated by the Delftware.  Here is a Delft violin.

The Van Gogh museum was simply amazing.  Crowded but amazing.  I hadn't realized that Van Gogh had done through a Japanese phase where he copied Japanese stylistics, though the word characters on the borders of those paintings were copied from various places so that he essentially surrounded his art with written gibberish!  Alas, they don't let you take any photographs in the Van Gogh museum.  :(  Still, there was a lot of amazing art.  I saw a ton of Rembrandt among other people.  I was deeply amused by this painting where all of the men are just looking at you like you just interrupted them.  This was at the Rijks museum.

Looking at you
