To the Supermarket!

Continuing with the low key weekend, especially since I am going to Bangkok next weekend, I decided that today I would brave a mall closer to home.  The nearest large and nice mall is JCube and it's by the Jurong East MRT station.  I took a bus there but on the way home I couldn't figure out which bus to get on so I landed up taking the MRT one stop and walking from there instead.  Anyway, I went to JCube for a few reasons - they have Western food and I've been feeling a little culture shocked and they have a supermarket which is what I figure is the best place to get laundry detergent and the like.  Since I am here for such a short time, I am using the landlady's stuff and she is almost out.  It would be rude to not leave any for her and to not replace what I have used so to the supermarket!  I did take some pictures of things but oddly the fish counter guy was all no pictures.  Not sure why, but I did put my camera away.  Here is what S$50 of stuff looks like (nevermind the dishes in the background!):

S$50 of groceries

The red box is Twinnings tea - it was more expensive than Lipton but I abhor Lipton.  The box under it is WASA crackers.  The yam shaped thing (between the laundry detergent and the upright spaghetti) is actually a Malaysian Mango and the woman at the checkout said that it was ripe when I asked.  I did get some Western food.  Don't judge me!  I was really tempted to get a can of tuna with mayonnaise in it just to try it but decided against it mostly because you gotta becareful with mayonnaise and mayonnaise at home is probably different than mayonnaise here (as I learned in Japan).  Most of the produce seemed to be commonly found fruits and vegetables - nothing terribly exotic.  I resisted getting starfruit only because they were sold in packs of 6 and I just wanted 1.  The market area close to my building is a not as upscale by any stretch of the imagination but they do have durian there...I'll try to get a picture of them before I leave.  Oh!  Here is a picture of the fruit? nuts? from the local trees that are in abundance here.  No idea what they are.

Now I am back in the condo and just noodling around on the internet.  Tomorrow, work!  I am very excited about meeting with Mani to discuss information literacy and what she wants me to work on.  I am also excited to finish up the cataloging lecture as it seems like a fairly comprehensive discussion of MARC which is something that I know nothing about.  I think I will take my work shoes and a long sleeved shirt and leave them at work.  Friday I had a devil of a time walking to work because the shoes don't really have any grip so I was constantly aware of slipping.  Made for a nerve wracking journey.  I'd rather wear the tennis shoes anyway.  I'm looking forward to my first real week of work!

As always, more pictures on the Flickr page!
